How to Repair Your Own Credit – Know Where You Stand

A lot of people are aware that they have a bad credit score but they are not too clear about just what information on their credit report is having the most impact. Finding that out is the first important step to effective credit repair.

To get started, order a copy of all of your credit reports and go thorough them line by line because what you need is to clean up credit report. There may be a debt you had forgotten that is causing a problem. There may even be a mistake (it happens and more often than you might think.) there will also be entries about any bad debt you have incurred, even if you have now paid it off. They have to remain on the report for seven years but their impact does lessen over time if you have demonstrated more recent good financial behavior.

How To Repair Your Own Credit - Understand the Way the Credit Bureaus Think

Time heals all wounds – an old saying but one that is quite true in the case of the credit bureaus. Sure you might have entries on your credit report that although settled will be sticking around for years to come yet but if you can push that information into the background by demonstrating that you can use new lines of credit responsibly then the credit bureaus give more weight to that new good behavior than they do to the old bad stuff when calculating scores.

How to Repair Your Own credit – Where to get New Credit

If you have a poor credit score you need a new line (or lines) of credit to begin building it back up. However, if you have a poor credit record finding these new lines of credit is going to be a bit of a challenge, especially in the current economic climate. It is unlikely that a major bank will be too interested in giving you an unsecured credit card and getting a loan might be tough too. Read more in credit repair credit cards article here. So where can you find this new credit you need? Here are just a few suggestions:

  • A store payment plan – Often when you buy a larger ticket household item you can take the option to finance over a certain number of weeks or months. In these situations your income tends to be more important than your credit score so you may have a good chance of being approved if you can demonstrate steady employment.
  • A store card tends to have lower credit requirements than a credit card so if your credit is bad but not appalling you may be able to get one of these. Some stores will also offer those who have a good payment record on their store card the chance to get a store branded credit card as well after a certain amount of time, a big help when you are rebuilding your credit.
  • A secured credit card. If your score is very poor, a secured credit card is probably the best way to go when looking for a new line of credit. Even though it is secured it still counts as a new line of credit just like a regular credit card and using it responsibly can boost your credit score more quickly than you might imagine.
